Rangoon box office

Vishal Bhardwaj’s historical drama ‘Rangoon‘ has registered extremely low numbers on its first Monday. The movie fell by almost 70-75% from the opening day numbers, as it collected Rs 1.25 crore nett on Monday. The total four day business of the movie stands at Rs 15.56 crore. The Monday collections of ‘Rangoon’ are highly disappointing because movies like ‘Fitoor’, ‘Mirzya’, ‘Bombay Velvet’ and ‘Rock On 2’ were also not so disappointing on their first Mondays and these movies are some of the biggest disasters at the box office.

The combination of Shahid Kapoor and Vishal Bhardwaj has been unlucky as their previous two movies as actor-director, ‘Kaminey’ (2009) and ‘Haider’ (2014) were also disasters, but considering the fact that this movie also had other stellar performers like Kangana Ranaut and Saif Ali Khan, such low numbers were not expected.

‘Rangoon’ met with a mixed response from the critics as their views were divided as some felt the movie was beautiful while the others felt the movie lacked depth. Well, of course all the three actors walked away with accolades for their performances in the movie, but the box office boost that the movie needed to qualify for a hit just hasn’t happened.

The movie was pitted against Anshuman Jha’s social media horror movie ‘Mona Darling’ which has been a complete washout at the box office, so what exactly could be the reason behind such low numbers? Is it that the audiences are not ready to watch dark love stories in cinema halls? Well, the movie’s fate has clearly been sealed.
