After Sonu Nigam, Suchitra Krishnamoorthi was the one to speak about the sound of azaan being a source of disturbance at dawn. She took to Twitter to protest against the sound of azaan and soon Twitteratis started trolling her. She tweeted, “came home at 4.45 am 2 most aggressive/ ear shattering call of azaan. Nothing more lowlife & dumb than such extreme imposed religiousity’. [sic]
This was followed by the actress facing a lot of flak for her outrage. From slut-shaming to calling her an attention seeker, Suchitra Krishnamoorthi suffered a lot because of her tweet. Frustrated with this nuisance, she approached the Mumbai Police to look into this matter. She was then directed by Cyber Crime Cell who then filed her complaint. As an update on the same, we have now learnt that four people have been booked in this case.
A senior officer commented on this issue and informed, “Based on her complaint, police registered a case under IPC sections 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) and 67 (a) (punishment for publishing or transmitting of material containing sexually explicit act), against four persons.”
When Sonu Nigam had tweeted about the azaan being given out on a loudspeaker, he too had faced a similar backlash from the people. He was also a target of trolls. In fact, a Maulvi issued a fatwa against Sonu Nigam and stated, “If anyone can shave his hair, put a garland of old torn shoes around his neck and tour him around the country I personally announce an award of Rs 10 lakh for that person.” Following this, Sonu shaved his head and challenged Maulvi’s words. Social media is rightly called a double-edged sword.
A strongly opinionated, free-spirited, budding Bollywood journalist, she likes to write anything in her own quirky style. When not running around to get assigned tasks completed, you will find her either painting, indulging in photography or dreaming in the la la land.
