August 24, 2023 is a day that would become an iconic one for actresses Alia Bhatt and Kriti Sanon. The 69th National Film Awards were announced on Thursday. And both Alia and Kriti won their first award at the highest acting honour in India.

Alia Bhatt, Kriti Sanon win Best Actress at National Film Awards 2023

Felicitated by the Government of India, the list of winners for 69th National Film Awards was announced on Thursday. Many Hindi films including Sardar Udham, Gangubai Kathiawadi and the global phenomenon RRR won multiple awards. The highest acting honour in the Best Actress category was announced as a tie between Alia for Gangubai Kathiawadi and Kriti for Mimi.

Both Alia and Kriti bagged several other acting awards in the last two years for their respective roles. Alia played the eponymous role of Gangubai, a young girl pushed into prostitution who eventually rises the political ranks to fight for the rights of her community in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Gangubai Kathiawadi. Whereas Kriti played the role of a small town girl who turns a surrogate for a foreigner couple.

Gangubai Kathiawadi won some more awards including Best Screenplay for Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Best Make Up. Whereas Mimi bagged another acting honour as Pankaj Tripathi was adjudged Best Supporting Actor at the ceremony. Allu Arjun won Best Actor for Pushpa while Pallavi Joshi emerged victorious in the Best Supporting Actress category. Other big winners include the likes of RRR, Sardar Udham and also a special mention for Shershaah.
