Nitesh Tiwari’s Dangal was starred and co-produced by Aamir Khan. It achieved immense success, grossing approximately ₹2,000 crore at the global box office. The film centred around the Phogat family and their contributions to wrestling. However, despite its popularity, the Phogat family did not receive substantial financial benefits from the film. Commonwealth wrestler Babita Phogat recently opened on the share of profits they received for Aamir Khan’s film Dangal.
Babita Phogat on share from profit received for Dangal
In a recent interview with News 24, wrestler-turned-politician Babita Phogat shared insights about the profits from shares received from the filmmakers for the rights to their story, Dangal. When asked about the financial compensation, Babita revealed that the Phogat family received less than 1% of the film’s total box office earnings. To clarify, she mentioned that instead of the assumed ₹20 crore, they were compensated with around ₹1 crore, which was half of 10% of that figure. This agreement was made long before Aamir Khan joined as a producer. It was during the scripting phase with director Nitesh Tiwari’s team.
Babita emphasized the significance of respect and affection from the audience over financial gain. Quoting her father, Mahavir Singh Phogat stated, “We want people’s respect and love. Leave everything else.” She credited her rise to fame largely to the support of the audience rather than solely due to the film. Babita also remembered that when Aamir’s team initially suggested altering the characters’ names. Mahavir stood firm, insisting on keeping the original names. Moreover, she mentioned her father’s proposal to Aamir’s team to establish a wrestling academy in Haryana after the film’s monumental success; however, that initiative never came to fruition.
