Aamir Khan’s ‘Dangal’ gets heavily criticised by the feminists of China

Aamir Khan’s wrestling biopic ‘Dangal‘ may not have crossed the record of ‘Baahubali 2’, but the movie has won several hearts and awards too. The movie is now taking China by storm as it has done a business of around Rs 500 crore at the box office. But, there are always going to be a section of people who are going to be healthy haters and same is the case for the movie. A section of feminists in China have bashed the movie heavily as they feel it strives on male chauvinism and depicts how a father forces his little daughters into wrestling to fulfil his dream of becoming a renowned wrestle.

A report in Global Times has stated that some women are not at all pleased by the concept and his characterisation. A viewer said, “The father’s values make me vomit; he forces his daughters to live a certain type of life with his dream, with money and becoming a champion. You think the movie is about breaking gender stereotypes, but actually, it’s knee-deep in prejudice.” Then, there was another viewer who said, “The movie reeks of patriarchy and male chauvinism. The daughters didn’t have any freedom to choose and were raised ferociously by their father to be world champions. Wei Tingting, director of the Guangzhou Gender and Sexuality Education Centre said that just some portions of the movie were “critical feminist comments, they were often met with long diatribes. Women who want more gender equality are anxious about defending their own rights and therefore apply feminism to every issue, while some men feel challenged by women’s rising status and attack feminism.”
