After Amitabh Bachchan, Anil Kapoor gets legal protection against use of his personality traits for commercial gain

Anil Kapoor is one of the most renowned actors from Bollywood with some signature traits of his own. His voice, his catchphrase ‘Jhakaas’ or even his My Name is Lakhan hook step, they all are quite unique to him. But now it will be illegal to use them without his permission. Delhi High Court has passed an order in the actor’s favour, protecting his rights.

Delhi High Court issues order to protect personality and publicity rights of Anil Kapoor

On Wednesday, Delhi High Court passed an order that prevents the use of Anil’s personality traits for commercial gain. It includes the usage of his voice, catchphrases, image and other attributes of his persona. Justice Prathiba M Singh passed the ex-parte interim order against several websites and platforms. It came after Anil filed a lawsuit against the unauthorised exploitation of his personality rights for commercial use.

Advocate Pravin Anand appeared as Anil’s counsel in front of the court. He pointed out to the incidents of his image being used illegally to collect fees at events, his images being morphed, his forged autographs being sold and many more. Justice Singh observed that while free speech is protected, it cannot come at a cost of jeopardising someone’s personality rights. She said, “Using the plaintiff’s name, voice, dialogue, image in illegal manner, that too for commercial purposes, cannot be permitted. Court cannot turn a blind eye to such misuse of personality.” A similar order was passed by the Delhi HC in favour of Amitabh Bachchan last year.

Anil Kapoor’s upcoming films

On the work front, Anil’s next project is Bhumi Pednekar starrer Thank You For Coming. He is also producing the film with daughter Rhea Kapoor and Ektaa R Kapoor. Apart from that, he has Animal with Ranbir Kapoor, releasing on December 1. He will also star in Hrithik Roshan and Deepika Padukone starrer Fighter next year.
