Recently, Rashmika Mandanna fell prey to a controversy as AI generated deepfake video of hers went viral all over the internet. The deepfake video falsely portrayed Rashmika in a black revealing dress as she entered the elevator while it inappropriately focused on her upper half. After Rashmika, Katrina Kaif also was a victim of a deepfake pic that is making rounds on the internet. Amid such happenings, the Indian government has dropped a stern reminder to social media platforms about the repercussions they will have to face about this.
Indian government drops a stern reminder about penalty for deepfakes
Amid such horrifying deepfakes of Rashmika and Katrina, you must be wondering what is the penalty for creating deepfake videos. So, Section 66D of the Information Technology Act, 2000 has been invoked by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. This section pertains to ‘punishment for cheating by personation by using a computer resource.’
The advisory stated, “Whoever by means of any communication device or computer resource cheats by personating, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may be extended to three years and shall also be liable to a fine which may extend to one lakh rupees.”

This advisory was much needed after Rashmika and Katrina’s deepfake videos started making rounds on the internet. Rashmika Mandanna’s AI-generated deepfake video was so convincing that it garnered a huge number of views. Deeply affected by this, Rashmika took to her Twitter handle and shared that the instance was scary. After her, Mrunal Thakur, Naga Chaitanya and others reacted too.
