Comedy is that one genre that has been working brilliantly in Bollywood for a very long time now. It’s also one of the only genres to have a massive success rate when it comes to releasing sequels. The next one in line is Ayushmann Khurrana and Ananya Panday’s Dream Girl 2. The first part released in 2019 and well, broke several box-office records. It was Ayushmann’s biggest opening and co-starred Nushrratt Bharuccha.

The sequel seems to be as promising with Ananya being the female lead and Ayushmann reprising his role as Pooja. It’s not new for a Bollywood comedy film’s sequel to have a new heroine in it. We saw the same in the sequels of films like Golmaal, Housefull, Welcome and Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. The audience loves watching new pairs on-screen and to keep the freshness alive in sequels of comedy films, filmmakers often end up replacing the original actress with someone who feels more relevant at that moment.

Comedy sequels where the female lead got replaced

We all remember the charming character of Gracy Singh in Lage Raho Munna Bhai. However, in the sequel, the production house decided to replace her with Vidya Balan and well, it was one of her most remembered performances. The Golmaal franchise has seen not one, not two but three heroines. It started with Rimi Sen and then went to Kareena Kapoor Khan and was taken over by Parineeti Chopra in Golmaal 4.

Even the Housefull franchise has seen several actresses step in for the role of the female lead. Jiah Khan, Deepika Padukone and Lara Dutta starred in the first one. While Asin, Jacqueline Fernandez and Zareen Khan took over the sequel. Nargis Fakhri and Lisa Haydon joined Jacqueline in the third part and the fourth one was headlined by Kriti Sanon, Kriti Kharbanda and Pooja Hegde.

The famous 2007 film Welcome starred Katrina Kaif and Mallika Sherawat in it. Its sequel Welcome Back featured Shruti Haasan.
