Ahead of Dunki, Shah Rukh Khan proves to be the box office king of 2023 with Pathaan and Jawan raking in around 2000 crore

After the colossal debacle of Zero in 2018, Shah Rukh Khan took a break from the movies. However, after a hiatus gap of over 4 years, the megastar made a roaring comeback and delivered an all-time blockbuster with Pathaan. The Siddharth Anand directorial spy-actioner earned Rs 543.05 crores domestically, while globally it minted Rs 1050.3 crores. Eight months later, the actor wreaked havoc yet again with Jawan. Directed by Atlee, the movie has earned over Rs 507 crore domestically in all languages. The worldwide collection of SRK’s Jawan stands at whopping Rs 907.54 crores. Combined, Jawan and Pathaan have grossed nearly Rs 2000 crores making Shah Rukh Khan the only Bollywood actor to deliver two $100 million grossers in a single calendar year.

Shah Rukh Khan emerged as one of the major contributors to the box office business in 2023. Speaking about it, Trade exhibitor Akshaye Rathi says, “He has not emerged as the major contributor; he has been that for the last 30 years. A bankable superstar whose presence in a film ensures revenues.”

He further added, “He had a slightly lean patch over the last few years before the pandemic but that doesn’t take away from the stardom he has consolidated and built for over three decades. All that was waiting to happen was a suitable film to come his way. As soon as Pathaan and Jawan happened and Dunki which will create magic again, he has delivered the best at the box office domestically and internationally. You could definitely say he owns the year in terms of box office impact in India and overseas for Indian films or Hindi films.”

Film critic and trade expert Joginder Tuteja asserts, “Shah Rukh has been not major, but biggest contributor by all means. The kind of business he has done, if you take other two to four superstars, the combined business of that is the one which King Khan delivered.  And Dunki again, I really really hope it’s good because the sky will be the limit then. It will be very huge all over again. But this year has been absolutely Shah Rukh’s year. He owned it about seven to eight years back as well. He took a well-thought-out break for about three to four years when he did not work in any film. SRK was basically working on the scripts and then started shooting for it about a year or so back.  And now he’s up there.”

SRK also has one more biggie titled Dunki coming up this year. Dunki will release on 22nd December 2023 on the occasion of Christmas. The movie is directed by Rajkumar Hirani who enjoys a 100 per cent success ratio with blockbusters like Munna Bhai MBBS, Lage Raho Munna Bhai, 3 Idiots, PK and Sanju. While Shah Rukh Khan’s fandom and 2023 success ratio speaks it all. Looking at these factors, it will be interesting to watch if Dunki surpasses the records of Pathaan and Jawan.
