Ajay Devgn CONFIRMS the new release date for Maidaan amid reports of movie being pushed

Ajay Devgn and producer Boney Kapoor’s upcoming collaboration, the sports drama Maidaan, has been looking for a release date for quite a while now. The makers had been working hard on finessing the film and the Covid pandemic played a huge role in the delay in that. But now that things have gotten back to a much more active state, the makers are all set to release the film. On Thursday morning, reports surfaced of the film being postponed, but amidst that, Ajay Devgn has confirmed the new release date for Maidaan.

Maidaan was earlier supposed to release on February 17, 2023, after many delays, but with Ajay’s other film Bholaa opening in March, the dates for both the films had been quite close to each other. Recent reports had suggested that Ajay had asked the makers to push the sports drama’s release a little further to avoid that congestion, and now the actor himself has confirmed that the film is indeed pushed to a new slot while sharing the new release date as well. The actor told Pinkvilla, “Maidaan is one of my best films. We (the producers, the director & all actors) think it needs a big and proper release. The film’s VFX is being handled by international studios and we want everything to align properly. Keeping the best interests of the film in mind, we have now decided to release the film on 12th May 2023.”

The earlier reports stated that the actor wants to cash in on the momentum started by his last release Drishyam 2, which has emerged as a blockbuster. The report stated, “Ajay aims to continue his momentum of success with the release of Bholaa in March. He feels Bholaa has the potential to open with a bang and score big in its opening weekend. Maidaan in between Drishyam 2 and Bholaa, might hamper the positioning of Bholaa as an event film, as it would leave too little gap between Drishyam 2, Maidaan and Bholaa.”

Maidaan is directed by Badhaai Ho fame Amit Sharma and the film is a biopic of former Indian coach, Syed Abdul Rahim. It chronicles the golden era of Indian football – 1950 to 1965 – when India went ahead to win gold medal at the Asian Games and played the semi finals at the Olympics. The film also features Priyamani and Gajraj Rao. While Ajay’s next Bholaa, which he has also directed, will release on March 30, Maidaan will now open on May 12, and with both the releases spread out, the actor has a very big chance to rule the first quarter of 2023 at the box office.
