Pop star Rihanna and climate activist Greta Thunberg extended their support towards the farmers’ protest. They also questioned the internet shutdown at protest sites in Delhi in their tweets. Post this, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a statement urging that celebrities should try to get a “proper understanding of the issues” before commenting on such matters. Bollywood celebs like Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgn and Karan Johar have backed this stand by the government.
MEA said in its statement, “Before rushing to comment on such matters, we would urge that the facts be ascertained, and a proper understanding of the issues at hand be undertaken. The temptation of sensationalist social media hashtags and comments, especially when resorted to by celebrities and others, is neither accurate nor responsible.”
Akshay Kumar supporting this, tweeted, “Farmers constitute an extremely important part of our country. And the efforts being undertaken to resolve their issues are evident. Let’s support an amicable resolution, rather than paying attention to anyone creating differences” with hashtags #IndiaTogether #IndiaAgainstPropaganda.

Why is a canadian citizen talking about India’s internal matters?
You did not speak on the farmers’ protests until today, when the govt has launched a PR overdrive to counter all the international attention on the oppression here. Don’t make it so obvious.Improve your acting.— S.R.Praveen (@myopiclenses) February 3, 2021
Finally it took Rihanna to wake up the conscience of Bollywood biggies. Wish you had reacted earlier than this. Played so many Sikh roles on screen. But you didn’t support protesting Sikh farmers in real life. Now you’ve come to defend those who caused farmers’ stir.
