Akshay Kumar has often faced criticism over his Canadian citizenship. The actor who is gearing up for the release of his upcoming film, Selfiee, recently opened up on the same. He also revealed that he has decided to renounce his Canadian citizenship and has applied for a change in his passport as India is everything to him.

Akshay Kumar to renounce Canadian citizenship

Akshay Kumar spoke about changing his citizenship on the first episode of Seedhi Baat on Aaj Tak. He said, “India is everything to me. Whatever I have earned, whatever I have gained is from here. And I’m fortunate that I get a chance to give back. You feel bad when people say things without knowing anything.”

The actor further revealed the reason he had applied for a Canadian passport. The Raksha Bandhan star said that as he was going through a lean phase in the 1990s. The poor box-office performance of his films pushed him to apply for Canadian citizenship.

He said, ā€œI thought that ā€˜Bhai, my films are not working and one has to workā€™. I went there for work. My friend was in Canada and he said, ā€˜Come hereā€™. I applied and I got in. But then my luck changed and my movies started working again. My friend told me to go back and continue working in Bollywood. So I was back and as I started getting more and more work forgot about my Canadian passport. It never came to my mind that I should get my passport changed. But now I have applied to get my passport changed.ā€
