India is the world’s largest democracy and roughly 50% of our population consists of women. Bollywood, as an industry has grown by leaps and bounds. Still, it is extremely male dominated and men call all the shots. Recently, delegates from the film industry had met PM Narendra Modi in Delhi to discuss a range of issues including Goods and Services Tax (GST).

The delegation in their presentation to PM Modi spoke about the strides being made by the film and entertainment industry and gave valuable inputs relating to GST for their sector.

Now, ‘Lipstick Under My Burkha’ director Alankrita Shrivastava is rather not impressed with the lack of female participation for the meet and took to micro-blogging site Twitter to make her displeasure known.

The director was also at the center of controversy last year when her film faced various hurdles from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) for being too female-centric.

Alankrita Shrivastava has raised a valid question regarding female participation in the meet. In recent times, we have seen the likes of Meghna Gulzar, Gauri Shinde, Nandita Das making huge strides in the industry and they have made some path-breaking films.

The Hindi film industry also needs to change with the times and after the #MeToo movement, it is quite imperative that women should be treated with respect and should be given their rightful place in the industry.
