Alia Bhatt’s sister Shaheen Bhatt shares how being body shamed as a kid affected her mental health

Alia Bhatt‘s elder sister, Shaheen who recently launched her book, ‘I’ve never been Unhappier’ made some startling revelations about how she was body-shamed as a kid for not ‘being cute’ just like her sisters. Shaheen has been battling depression since the age of 13. A few years back she started sharing her journey and writing about her battle with depression.

At a recent event, while talking about Shaheen struggles, Alia cried inconsolably for not being able to understand her sister the way she needed to. Shaheen recalled the dark phase of her life when she struggled with the depression.

In a recent conversation with journalist, Barkha Dutt at ‘We The Women’ event, Shaheen and Alia were present to talk about the latter’s book ‘I’ve never been Unhappier’. During the conversation, Shaheen shared how she was body-shamed as a kid. Recalling an incident, Shaheen said that she was hurt when one of the photographers asked her to step out of the frame, as they wanted to click the pictures of her sisters Pooja and Alia.

She said, “It was then heartbreaking to me when a photographer wanted to take the pictures of the Bhatt sisters together and suddenly he asked me to step out of the frame. Because he wanted to click the pictures of Pooja and Alia together as they both look quite similar. They were fair, cute, they were literally like the carbon copies of each other. But it still makes me uncomfortable to talk about. It happened at a formative level of life, so naturally, a lot of ideas about myself that formed in my head were not nice. For whatever reason, I think the photographers were not trying to hurt my feelings.”

Further revealing about how she suffered from depression from a very young age, Shaheen added, “For me, the depression started when I was 12, and because it happened to me at such a young age it becomes quite progressive and affected me. My entire personality got sort of molded around that. But during my childhood, I was an extrovert, I used to have fun.”

Shaheen has come a long way now. She has published two books and is a screenwriter. She shares a great bond with Alia.

Shaheen is the daughter of Soni Razdan and Mahesh Bhatt. She is five years older than Alia. Pooja Bhatt is Shaheen and Alia’s half-sister.
