Ameesha Patel made a smashing entry in Bollywood in the year 2000 with Hrithik Roshan co-starrer Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai. The film was a big critical and commercial success and made both the debutantes overnight stars. Ameesha followed that success with an even bigger one in Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, co-starring Sunny Deol. But post that, the actress had a tumultuous career.
Ameesha Patel on being an outsider and called a ‘snob’
In a recent interview, Ameesha pointed out that she entered the film industry amidst many star kids. The scenario made people think she was a ‘snob’, and being treated differently. She told Bollywood Hungama, “When I entered the film industry, I only had film actors’ kids or producers’ kids enter with me. It was Kareena Kapoor, Abhishek Bachchan, Hrithik Roshan, Tusshar Kapoor, Esha Deol, Fardeen Khan. You name it, you turn your head and it was a film family third generation person coming in.”
She added, “I was the outsider. And I was anyway this south Bombay (girl) looked upon as a snob because I was the educated outsider. I was the one who did not b**** on sets. I read books, I did not gossip, so I was anyway called a snob because I chose to read.”
Ameesha on her contemporaries’ ‘jealousy’
Since Ameesha achieved 2 back-to-bag humongous successes, she insisted that it made her contemporaries jealous. The actress said, “Then seeing success after success, seeing Hrithik and me becoming the heartthrob of the nation overnight and then Gadar coming in and then Badri coming in… whether it is Telugu, Tamil or Hindi cinema. God was kind, he knew I didn’t have a godfather so he gave me successful films. But my contemporaries could not handle that.”
Ameesha went on to add that she was even ousted from films without her knowledge. She informed, “There was a lot of jealousy, snatching films from under your nose. There was a lot of cutting you off from films which I did not realise at that time that I have signed my films, blocked my dates but suddenly I am not on that set and a few months later someone else is.”
Post her two big successes, Ameesha did face a slump. Yet, she was a part of some big films like Salman Khan starrer Yeh Hai Jalwa, Akshay Kumar’s Bhool Bhulaiyaa and Race 2. Currently, Ameesha is gearing up for Gadar 2 which has a release date of August 11, 2023.
