Jaya Bachchan recently opened up about her love story with Amitabh Bachchan. She also revealed that Big B had told her, before their wedding, that he didn’t want a wife who will work 9-5.
Speaking with granddaughter Navya Naveli Nanda on her podcast ‘What The Hell Navya’, Jaya Bachchan was asked how she was proposed. The veteran actor said, “I was shooting in Calcutta and we had decided that we will go for a holiday if one movie that we had done is a hit. Zanjeer. The movie was a hit.”
She further added that they had decided to get married in October but Big B’s father, Harivansh Rai Bachchan said he wouldn’t allow them to go on a trip without marriage. She added, “So he called me up and asked that we were anyway getting married in October but do you mind getting married earlier.” And she agreed for the same.

Jaya Bachchan also revealed that her father was not ready at first, since he didn’t want his daughters to just get married, settle and have kids. He wanted them to make their own individuality. It was Big B who convinced her father. Things worked out and they got married in June 1973.
Jaya went on to add that Amitabh Bachchan was very clear that he didn’t want a wife who works 9-5. He said, “you please work, you must! But I definitely don’t want a wife who will work every day from 9-5. You choose good projects, work with the right people.”
Big B and Jaya tied the knot in 1973 at her Godmother’s house in Mumbai. They welcomed two children – Shweta Bachchan (1974) and Abhishek Bachchan (1976).
On the work front, Amitabh Bachchan will be seen in The Intern remake, Project K and Uunchai. Jaya Bachchan has Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani with Alia Bhatt, Ranveer Singh, Dharmendra and Shabana Azmi.
