Legendary actor-director and playwright Girish Karnad breathed his last on June 10. The 81-year-old died in a Bengaluru hospital reportedly due to multiple organ failure. Karnad’s death marked an end of an era, as he was one of those artists who never shied away from voicing his opinion and calling a spade a spade. Known to be an artist with a conscience and one of the first liberals of his generation, Karnad’s death has left a void which will perhaps be never filled.

Karnad was conferred with Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, Jnanpith Award, Sahitya Academy Award and several other honours. Amul paid a heartfelt tribute to the veteran actor-director and it really was a walk down memory lane.

One of the most popular films of Girish’s career is Shyam Benegal’s ‘Manthan’ which was set in the backdrop of the White Revolution in India. The film not only bagged the National Award for Best Feature Film but was also India’s submission to the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film (1976).

Paying a tribute to the legendary man, Amul shared a black and white sketch of Girish with a touching caption that read, “Mann se Manthan Tak”.

Karnad’s family declined to keep his body for public viewing. He was cremated quietly without any rituals or state honour. As per Karnad’s last wish, he was cremated at a local crematorium in the presence of his family and a few close friends.

The actor, director, screenwriter, unmatchable playwright and a multi-lingual scholar will always remain in our hearts.
