Oscar-winning music composer AR Rahman was issued notice by Madras High Court for tax evasion based on an appeal filed by the Income Tax department. Apparently Rahman had evaded tax by allegedly transferring income of over Rs.3 crore, to his charitable trust AR Rahman Foundation.

The music composer’s foundation has finally responded to the High Court’s notice.

According to The Times of India report, presenting their side of the story, AR Rahman Foundation issued a statement which read, “The receipt of funds in the current matter has already been offered to tax in the hands of the AR Rahman Foundation which was appreciated by the Honorable Income Tax Appellate Tribunal, Chennai Bench while it adjudicated the matter in favour of Mr AR Rahman. We will continue to offer our full support and cooperation. May justice prevail.”

Their statement further added, “In the last 14 years, we have positively impacted the lives of students, retired musicians and those affected by Chennai floods and more recently, the Covid-19 pandemic.”

For the uninitiated, the IT department had appealed in HC that Rahman has evaded tax by allegedly transferring income of over Rs.3 crore, to his charitable trust AR Rahman Foundation. The Madras HC had issued a notice to the music composer seeking an explanation about this case which was filed by the IT department when they found irregularities in the musician’s tax filing for the year 2011-12.

The IT department had alleged that Rahman received Rs 3.47 crore based on a contract of composing exclusive ringtones with a UK-based telecom company however he routed the remuneration to his charitable trust.
