Aryan Khan Case: Key findings from the NCB’s SIT investigation

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) was set up to investigate the Aryan Khan case. The findings state that there was no evidence against Shah Rukh Khan’s son that points at him being a part of a larger drugs conspiracy or an international drugs trafficking syndicate.

Further, the SIT has also found that there were multiple irregularities in the raid which was conducted. The raid took place on October 2 last year when Shah Rukh Khan’s son Aryan Khan was taken in by the NCB.

On the contrary to the allegations made by the NCB’s Mumbai unit, SIT has said that there is no evidence pointing at Aryan’s involvement. As per a report by Hindustan Times, SIT officials have revealed the key findings of their investigation.

Aryan was not in possession of drugs

Firstly, the officials revealed that Aryan Khan was never in possession of drugs when he was taken in. There was no requirement to take his phone and check his chats.

Chats don’t point at a conspiracy

Further, the chats do not point at Khan being part of any international syndicate. Based on the chats, Wankhede’s team had claimed the accused were part of a larger conspiracy. The agency had alleged that Aryan Khan was in touch with a foreign drug supplier and also said that the chats referred to “hard drugs” and “bulk quantities”.

NCB did not record the raid

The raid which was conducted by the NCB was not video-recorded which is mandated by the NCB manual.

Recovered drugs were shown single recovery

The drugs that were recovered from the raid from multiple accused arrested in the case were shown as a single recovery.

The SIT investigation has raised questions in the raid as a whole along with the agency’s former Mumbai Zonal Unit director Sameer Wankhede who headed the raid. Wankhede has been examined several times. He has been questioned by SIT and the agency’s vigilance team. He was repatriated to his parent cadre.

The report further stated that the SIT probe is not yet complete. The unit will submit its final report in a couple of months to the NCB Director General S N Pradhan. Before that, a legal opinion will be taken and then the final decision will be announced. Mainly this will include whether Aryan Khan can be charged for consumption even though he was not carrying any drugs.

On October 2 last year, Wankhede led a team of officers and some witnesses to conduct a raid on a cruise ship, Cordelia, at International Cruise Terminal at Green Gate in Mumbai. They had seized 13 grams of cocaine, five grams of mephedrone, 21 grams of marijuana, 22 pills of MDMA (Ecstasy), and ₹1.33 lakh in cash. The agency had then intercepted 14 persons and interrogated Aryan Khan, 24, Arbaaz Merchant, 26, and Munmum Dhamecha, 28, placing them under arrest on October 3 afternoon.
