Bengali cinema’s reclusive actress who had bewitched cinema lovers all over the world with her beauty and elegance, actress Suchitra Sen has passed away. The 82-year old actress, under treatment at the Belle Vue Clinic for the last 26 days following serious respiratory problems died on Friday following a massive cardiac arrest. Sen’s appeal lay in her intense and dreamy eyes and a bewitching smile in close-up frames – floored countless male fans cutting across age and time barriers.
As per sources, Suchitra Sen withdrew from the public eye, refusing to meet even top VIPs and her old friends from the film fraternity. No photographs of the legend were allowed and only her daughter and grand daughters and some close friends could meet her. Whenever she ventured outdoors, she took all care to hide her identity.
A widow, Suchitra left behind her daughter Moon Moon and grand daughters Riya and Raima – all three having taken up acting as a career. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has announced a gun salute at the actress’s funeral. Mrs. Sen’s last rites will be held in Kolkata’s Keoratola crematorium later today.
