EXCLUSIVE: Bhumi Pednekar HITS BACK at trolls for slut-shaming: Aapki soch mein gandagi hai, not in our clothes

Bhumi Pednekar, Shehnaaz Gill, Dolly Singh, and Shibani Bedi are promoting Karan Boolani directorial Thank You For Coming. Ahead of the film’s release, the Thank You For Coming cast joined Bollywood Bubble for a candid conversation. The actresses opened up about sexism, being slut-shamed and a lot more. Speaking of the latter, Bhumi shared an incident as she admitted to being slut-shamed.

Bhumi talks about getting slut-shamed

Taking a dig at people who say negative things, Bhumi said, “I think slut-shaming is one of the most favourite things that people can do, right? It is so often you hear that if you’re speaking to a boy, there’ll be ten people going to tell you that ‘Oh, she’s been around town’ but so has he. Why are the rules different?”

The actress added, “Agar aap independent ho as a person, or aap mein thode ambitions hai. Joh bhi cheez logon ko uncomfortable yaa dara deta hai na, log phir aapko difficult, slut-shamed karte hai. (If you’re an independent person or you have ambitions. Anything that makes a person uncomfortable or scared, people then call you difficult or slut-shame you). Gender norms are so different humare country mein.”

Bhumi recalls an incident

Thank You For Coming traileras released in September and it received mixed response from the audience. Bhumi, Shehnaaz and others were trolled for multiple reasons. Recalling an incident, Bhumi shared, “Jab trailer release hua these are people that I communicate and they were telling me ‘aap ke trailer mein kya kar rahe hai ladkiyaan? Sirf shots pi rahi hai, dance kar rahi hai. Aapne family audience ko dur kar diya hai. Kon aake dekhega? I was like yehi toh soch badalni hai. (When the trailer released, someone I communicate with told me ‘What are you doing in the trailer? Girls are only having fun, they’re dancing etc. You’ve detached the family audience. Who will come and watch? I was like this is the thinking that should be changed).”

Bhumi further mentioned that she including her members are girls who have fun, pray, meditate and even spend time with family. She added, “So, what is being a good girl? Am I supposed to clothe the way you want me to be clothed? Do you want me to speak the way you want me to? And if I don’t do things according to you or the way society wants then the problem is not in us, but its in you. It’s my choice, you change the way you look at things. Aapki soch mein gandagi hai, mere kapdon mein nahi.”

Furthermore, Shehnaaz Gill opened up about getting trolled during TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival) and feeling cornered at parties. That’s not all, Dolly Singh and Shibani Bedi also reacted to the ‘influencer’ tag.
