Actor Bhumi Pednekar is all set to amaze the audience with her never-done-before avatar in Badhaai Do. As the movie talks about two homosexual people are coming together for holy matrimony, the actor opens on playing a lesbian in the film. She revealed that the makers have written it sensitively and they have not rushed into making the character. Bhumi told indiatoday, “The idea is to empower the community, not make fun of them or not use them as bait to entertain the audience. It is a film that really makes you question. It is a film that leaves you heavy-hearted while it really entertains you,” adding that the film will be successful in battling the cause
Bhumi Pednekar was asked if she had second thoughts in playing a homosexual role in Badhaai Ho, to which, she denied it while mentioning she should be able to play a lesbian woman irrespective of her sexual preference. “This is exactly what the film speaks about. I am an actor and I am playing a character. Why should only a queer woman who has a certain sexual preference like my character be considered for the role? I am somebody who has worked hard and there is a certain amount of talent that comes with me, then why do I not deserve this part any more or less than somebody else [whose sexual preference is different than mine]? I mean, how is that fair?” she told the portal.
The Dum Laga Ke Haisha actor feels that as an actor, their profession demands to do different roles and feels that more films should represent the LGBTQI community. “What we need is that whether it’s a trans woman or it’s a woman playing a part in a film should not matter. That’s what normalising a conversation is all about,” the actor added.
