Carnival Motion Pictures CEO Vaishali Sarwanker: Films are a festival and theatres give a sense of grandeur to our films

Carnival Motion Pictures CEO Vaishali Sarwanker spoke to us about their movie ‘Mere Desh Ki Dharti’, theatre re-opening, OTT platforms and a lot more about the business and the current situation of theatres.

In the Coronavirus pandemic, theatres are highly affected as they were closed and owners faced a huge challenge. On this, Vaishali said, “I like tough situations and this kind of situations actually build a character. It prepares you for the betterment of everything. So, it’s nice that we came across the lockdown, and the pandemic delayed our movie shootings and we were to announce another film but everything got delayed. It’s ok and we are presenting ourselves now in a perfect way we can present than earlier. So, we have utilised the time to review and evaluate the situation and how we can present ourselves in a better way to you.”

She added, “Basically, we are at producer’s share and we have a huge responsibility to make sure that everyone is happy. There are a lot of people involved in the project and having said that there has to plan B for everything.  If you are a clever business person, you will definitely go for plan B. So, right now the situation is as such that the terms are not in our favour but however if our cash flow is good, we will wait for some time and if not we will definitely go ahead and explore an opportunity of the digital platform because a story cannot be held back for long. Our movie is ready to hit the theatres. We will go for the best option and can make everyone happy who is involved in the project.”

During the lockdown, most of the films are released on OTT and it has taken the front seat. To which she said, “Every producer wants their films to go to theatres and as I have said film is a religion of India and we want to celebrate it. No matter last these nine months the opinions and comments have changed because they don’t have any option and they are releasing films on OTT. OTT also has a different format which is great because it makes sure it reaches everywhere. Films are meant to be released in theatres and I would like to see movies in theatres. But yes, when the option is not there, then why not OTT. However, I would still prefer to release my films in theatres and then it goes to OTT. So, we have to follow that traditional format and we cannot break that.”
