As the release date for Vicky Kaushal’s upcoming film Chhaava approaches, the movie has sparked controversy over a deleted dance sequence. The film, which features Vicky portraying Sambhaji Maharaj, faced backlash regarding visuals of him performing a traditional Maharashtrian folk dance called Lezim after the trailer was released.
Vicky Kaushal opens up on Chhaava dance controversy
In a recent interview, Vicky Kaushal addressed the controversy. The actor stated that the deleted dance sequence was “not important to the story of the movie.” He emphasized that it was intended as an effort to showcase Indian culture on a global stage. He remarked, “The Lezim part was just for 20-30 seconds in the film. It was an effort of taking our culture to the globe.”
Commitment to film’s theme
Vicky further elaborated on the film’s production, indicating that the team consistently incorporated themes related to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj during filming. He mentioned, “Not a single day went by when we didn’t start work on the film without the Shivgarjana (slogans about the courage of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj).”
In defence of the dance, Vicky explained, “Sambhaji Maharaj was a king of the people, and if someone asked him to play (Lezim) with them, the king would definitely oblige.” However, he acknowledged the concerns of the audience.“If his followers feel it was a bit off… It is not important to the story of the movie, so we have removed it.”
Director’s decision
Director Laxman Utekar also weighed in on the decision to remove the dance sequence. He revealed that he consulted with Raj Thackeray before making the change. The director expressed his respect for Thackeray’s insights, saying, “I have met Raj Thackeray. He is an avid reader and studious person. His words are very helpful for me.” Utekar stated that he ultimately decided to cut the scenes featuring the Lezim dance. He said, “Sambhaji Maharaj is very much bigger than that Lezim dance.”
As Chhaava is set to release next week, the film continues to generate discussion. It is mainly around its portrayal of historical figures and cultural elements.
