Bollywood filmmakers and celebrities have always been heavily influenced by their western counterparts. We try to inculcate their lifestyles and cultures. However, when it comes to taking up a stand against casting couch or sexual harassment at workplace very few Bollywood actresses have come forward and spoken about it openly.
The recent ‘Time’s Up’ and ‘Me Too’ campaign took the Hollywood by storm, so in a recent interview to Evening Standard, when asked about possibility of any such similar movement taking place in Bollywood, ‘Padmaavat’ actress Deepika Padukone said, “We’re in the same position as the rest of the world, I think we’re all in this together. There’s so much more awareness. There are so many people who speak up and I think in the same way that we see the wheels moving in the right direction globally, I see the same thing happening in India as well.”

When asked if she ever faced any sexism at the workplace, the actress said, “There were lots of things I was advised [to do]. To get a boob job, do the beauty pageants. They felt it was the right way to be recognised or picked up by a Bollywood director or producer. It might be an easier way to achieve what you want to achieve. But I haven’t been that person; I’ve always followed my gut.”
Well said Deepika. How we wish that other A-list actresses too come forward and share their experiences which may help in starting a movement like ‘Time’s Up’ in India as well.
