Jawan: Deepika Padukone getting cast in the Shah Rukh Khan starrer has a Pathaan connection

Deepika Padukone was introduced to have just a special appearance in Shah Rukh Khan starrer Jawan. However, it turned out to be a good length role and one that left an indelible mark. People have been raving about Deepika’s role and the impact it leaves on the story as well as the audience. But the way she was approached to play the role is quite a fun story.

At the Jawan success press conference in the city, SRK revealed that he and Atlee wanted Deepika only for Aishwarya’s role in the film. He said, “From day 1, we were thinking what if we had Deepika in this role? But I was saying I don’t know, she’ll be busy. I love her too much, I will never call her for something which doesn’t become of essence for her since she started her career with me.”

The actor went on to reveal that he asked Deepika about Jawan while they were shooting Besharam Rang from Pathaan. SRK revealed, “Deepika was doing Besharam Rang and I am sitting. I look at Pooja (Dadlani, SRK’s manager) and say, ‘ye maa ka role karegi? (Will she do a mother’s role?)’. So, I am looking at Deepika do Besharam Rang and I say she’ll be very good as mother no? So, Pooja said Shah, she loves you too much, she will of course say yes but let me ask her.”

And as expected, Deepika didn’t take even a breath to say yes to Shah Rukh. A humbled King Khan informed, “Honestly, Pooja must have gone 2 seconds before to her, and coming back, Deepika said ‘yeah, whenever you say. Just tell Atlee sir I’ll come and do it’. It was very large-hearted of her. I know we are too close to each other and we love each other like family. But even then, sometimes work and profession comes in your head and heart. For her to have done this, also as an actor it’s very gutsy. I always say there are no small roles, there are only small actors. I think with this film, Deepika really proves to everybody that she is a really large-size actor.”

Deepika on playing a mother in Jawan

When asked if she had any apprehension playing a mother in Jawan, after her sultry performance in Pathaan, Deepika shrugged it off. She said, “I honestly didn’t think about it like that at all. I don’t know if actors really think about it like that like ‘oh, I am playing this sultry something in one movie and then I have to play a mother in the next’. I personally didn’t approach it like that at all. Like I said, I invested in the vision, I invested in the story we were telling. If that meant I play the role of a mother to enable this storytelling, then so be it.”

Well, SRK and Deepika’s pairing has done wonders again and the box office numbers of Jawan are a testament to that. The film has collected Rs 696.67 crores worldwide in its extended first week. Jawan also features Nayanthara, Vijay Sethupathi, Sanya Malhotra, Priyamani, Sunil Grover and Ridhi Dogra.
