The Bollywood industry mourns the loss of Nitin Chandrakant Desai, a renowned art director. He tragically passed away by suicide early on Wednesday. Over the last five years, he secured four National Awards for his contributions to various movies. His remarkable talent in films like Devdas, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, and Jodha Akbar is celebrated far and wide.
Nitin Desai passes away at the age of 57
The art director was found dead at his ND Studio in Khalapur near Karjat. He took his own life days before his 58th birthday on August 9. According to India Today, a local MLA from Karjat, Mahesh Baldi BJP confirmed that he died by suicide due to financial crisis. He was quoted saying, “Nitin Desai’s ND studio comes in my constituency, the financial crisis was going on for many days and due to that, he committed suicide in ND Studio this morning.”
In his final projects as an art director, he worked on big-budget films like Panipat and Prem Ratan Dhan Paayo.

First in 1999 for Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar, then in 2000 for Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, followed by 2002 for the Oscar-nominated Lagaan, and finally in 2003 for Devdas. His brilliance, recognized by the Maharashtra State Award in 2009 for Harishchandrachi Factory, immortalizes his visionary legacy.
