Captain Vikram Batra is definitely the epitome of courage and inspiration. His real-life love story with Dimple Cheema makes him stand out. Captain Batra was martyred fighting with the enemy at a height of 16,000 feet during the Kargil conflict in 1999. Dimple Cheema and Vikram met for the first time at Punjab University in Chandigarh in 1995. Both had enrolled to pursue a Master’s degree in English.
Talking to The Quint, Dimple shared that neither of them was able to complete it. Destiny played its part in bringing them together and making them forever connected, she added. Dimple further revealed that Vikram was blissfully happy when he was selected for the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun in 1996. Dimple also shared an incident when she nearly married Vikram.
The couple used to regularly visit the Mansa Devi temple and Gurudwara Sri Nada Sahab. Once, after completing a parikrama, Vikram suddenly told Dimple, “‘Congratulations, Mrs Batra. Didn’t you realise that this is the fourth time that we are doing this parikrama?”
Dimple added she was completely speechless after hearing that. That was the extent of his dedication to the relationship, she said further. Dimple was Vikram’s girlfriend for a year and got engaged to him before Vikram’s posting to Kargil.
Dimple did not marry after Vikram’s death. In the past 22 years, there has been no day that Dimple has not remembered him. For Dimple, her and Vikram’s love was immortal and will remain till eternity. In the same interview, Dimple was quoted saying that, “I know in my heart we are destined to meet again, it’s just a matter of time.”

Actor Siddharth Malhotra will be playing the role of Capt. Vikram Batra in his biopic Shershaah while actress Kiara Advani will be seen in the role of Dimple Cheema. During the shooting of Shershah, Vikram Batra’s twin brother, Vishal Batra made Kiara meet Dimple. Talking about Dimple and her relationship with Vikram Batra, Kiara told Indian Express, “It was very warm because it was only the both of us. I was in Chandigarh shooting for something else and it was all thanks to Vishal Batra, who made us meet. There was no one else in the room and she spoke and I just listened to her. She reminisced about all her memories, their moments. How things were back then, writing letters, trunk calls.”
Shershaah will release on August 12 on Amazon Prime Video.
