Gippy Grewal made his film debut in a supporting role in the Punjabi film, Mel Karade Rabba. He later went on to star in many Punjabi movies and successfully carved a niche for himself in the industry. It was in 2015, Gippy entered Bollywood with a guest appearance in the comedy-drama film, Dharam Sankat Main. He later starred in movies such as Second Hand Husband and Lucknow Central.
Now, in an exclusive interview with Bollywood Bubble, Gippy Grewal recalled an incident with his fan and spoke about the difference between Bollywood and Pollywood.
Gippy Grewal said, “Humare Punjab mein farak kya hai joh humare kahi baar yaha par lagta hai, hum yaha pe kahi baar kaafi artist ko dekhte hai joh market mein aise ghum rahe hote hai aur bada star koi aajata hai. Toh log picture n all lene ke bhi jaate hai kahi baar aaram se ke ‘kya hum photo kar sakte hai? Kya hum aise kar sakte hai?’ toh humare yaha aisa nahi hai. Humara matlab ye nahi hai ke hum photo kar sakte hai, yeh nahi hai na..Humara toh paaji photo.. Humara woh hai na. (Here we often observe those who see an artist or a big star, people come and click pictures and many times they ask ‘Can I click a picture?’ Can I do this?’ Whereas at our place, its not that people don’t click pictures, fans come and say paaji (brother) photo. That’s how it is.)”

Recalling an incident, Gippy said, “Plane mein bhi safar kar rahe hote ho toh mujhe yaad hai ek baar mein Canada ko jaa raha tha toh mein flight take off hui, toh mujhe neendh aarahi thi, toh maine apne seat seedhi kari aur mein so gaya. Mein bas soya hi tha aur mujhe koi utha raha hai na. Toh peeche se aaya koi banda uthke and bole ‘paaji, sote paaye’ and maine kaha ‘ha’. ‘Utho paaji, photo kariye’ matlab aapko karni padegi photo. (One time when I was travelling in plane, I remember I was going to Canada and my flight took off, I was very sleepy and I was adjusting my seat. I was just sleeping and someone woke me up saying ‘Brother, wake up. Let’s click a picture)”
Grewal went on to add, “Kya hai ki unka pyaar hai aise na. So humari har cheez kya hai na joh mujhe achi lagti hai, haar cheez loud hai. Humare punjabiyon mein kya hai ki Punjabi fake nahi hai. Aur humare jab filmein bhi banti hai na, jaise hi Jasmin (Bhasin) ne bola ke wahan pe agar mein tha, meri film ban rahi hai toh aisa nahi hai ki mereko koi banda bol hi nahi sakta ki paaji aapka ye theek nahi lag raha, aapki shirt theek nahi lag rahi, ya aapne theek nahi kia. Humare sab bolte hai ‘Oh paaji woh yenda karke dekh lo, badhiya nahi lag raha. Yenu ye karlo woh karlo’. Humare pass yes sir wale kum bande hai. Humara joh bolta hai dil se bolta hai. (It’s their love. What I like about Punjabis is that we are loud. Punjabis are not fake. Even when we make films, like Jasmin said, if I am making a film so it’s not like ki no one tell me that brother this is not good or your shirt is not looking good. Punjabis will tell you directly ‘Do this in this way or this is not looking good on you.’ Punjabis speak from their heart)”

He added, “So, woh cheeze hai na, tab aapke product mein, jab aapke aas-pass waise bande rehte hai, toh aapki growth hoti hai. Toh humare fans bhi waise hi hai. Dil se kehne wale. Achi cheez ko achi kahenge, buri cheez ko buri kahenge. (So, that’s one thing. When you have these kind of people around you, that’s when your growth happens. So, our fans are also like that. They speak from their heart. They will call good things good and bad things bad)”
