EXCLUSIVE: Madhuri Dixit recalls being asked to stop dancing post becoming a mother

Madhuri Dixit Nene is one of the most versatile actors in Bollywood. Madhuri made her acting debut with a leading role in ‘Abodh’ and then there was no looking back for her. She has delivered several hits in her career and proved that she’s irreplaceable. The actress recently delivered a terrific performance in Maja Ma. The Dhak Dhak girl of Bollywood played the role of a devoted wife who is famous for her dance and cooking. As many know, Madhuri is not just a brilliant actor, but she’s also a terrific dancer.

In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Bubble, Madhuri recalled she was asked to stop dancing post becoming a mother. She told us, “Aisa hota hai alag alag logon ke alag alag soch hoti hai. Aur bohot se aise bolte hai aap toh abhi maa ban gai, abhi aap kyu dance kar rahe hai. Aap baith jaaiye abhi, aap ghar dekhiye, aisa kijiye waise kijiye. Lekin mujhe aisa lagta hai ki yeh sab toh hum karte hi hai. Bacchon ko dekhna aur ghar sambhalna yeh sab toh sab karte hi hai. Kuch apna bhi ek personality hota hai, apna bhi ek wajood hota hai. (There are people who think differently. There are many people who say things like you just became a mother then why are you dancing. So you be at home, do this and that. But I think that we anyway do all these things. Looking after kids, home etc. Even we have our own personality)”

She continued, “Apke bhi emotions hai, aapke bhi chahatein hai life mein joh hum karna chahte hai toh kyu aisa hota hai ki gharpe joh hai, ghar sambhal rahi hai, joh housewife hai usko taken for granted ho jaate hai ki bhaiya ye toh kar legi aur ye hojaega aur ye toh aa hi jayegi, acha koi baat nahi aap aajaiye toh thoda kaam kar legi. Toh yeh jo hota hai na taken for granted so woh ek…aisa kyu hai? Kyunki woh khudke liye kuch toh kare. Yeh bohot important cheez hai aur ye humesha mujhe ye feeling rehti thi ki it’s a very important thing, so jab mujhe ye script ayi, mujhe laga this is something that needs to be told. (We have emotions too. We have our desires in life so then why is it like this that the ones who are are at home, they take care of homes. Many takes housewives for granted and they think, no matter what, she’s take care of everything. So why does this happen? It’s an important thing and I always have this feeling that it’s a very important thing)”

When asked if it has ever bothered her, Madhuri said, “It never bothers me. Marathi mein bolte hai ‘aika janachi kara manachi’. Apni karo and I believe in that. Aur ek gaana bhi hai kuch toh log kahenge, unka kaam hai kehna. Lekin aap apna kaam karo. Aaj kyu aise pehchana jaata hai ‘oh Madhuri Dixit aisa kaam kar rahi hai’, it’s because I’m doing it. Aur mere joh ird-gird hai my mother-in-law, my mom or my husband, sab log mujhe support karte hai. So jab tak woh support nahi mile, family ka support na mile toh aurat life mein joh karna chahti hai woh nahi kar payegi (It never bothers me. In Marathi there’s a saying ‘Aika Janachi Kara Manachi’. Do what you want to do and I believe in that. And there’s also a song ‘Kuch Toh Log Kahenge, Logon Ka Kaam Hai Kehna’, so do what you want to do. Today why am I popular, it’s because I’m doing it. And I’ve people around me, my mother-in-law, my mom, my husband, everyone who support me. A woman will be unable to achieve her dreams if there is no support from her family).”

Madhuri is married to Dr. Shriram Nene. They are proud parents of two kids – Arin and Ryan.
