EXCLUSIVE: Neena Gupta recalls getting rejected for being a good artist: The filmmaker said, I need stars not actors

Neena Gupta is currently one of the most loved and adored actors in the Hindi film industry. After her path-breaking performance in Badhai Ho, the actress is breaking stereotypes and winning hearts with her performances in the movies. She was seen in the film Goodbye, Uunchai, and garnered much praise for her performance. Gupta is all set to feature in Vadh alongside Sanjay Mishra.

Ahead of the release of Vadh, we sat down with Neena Gupta and her co-star Sanjay Mishra, for a candid conversation. In an exclusive chat with us, the actress opened up about the time when she was rejected for a role.

Gupta spoke at length about how she asks for work now, and does not shy away like before. However, the Vadh actress recalled the time when she was rejected for being a good artist. She mentioned shying away while asking a director for a role in his movie.

Opening up about the incident, Gupta told Bollywood Bubble, “Shuru shuru mein when I was struggling, main ek director ke paas gayi. Maine kaha, shayad ye toh de de. Bohot, heavy duty director. Main gayi unke paas (Earlier, when I was struggling, I went to one director. I thought, he might give me work. He was a heavy duty director. So, I went to him for work).”

She further added, “Maine kaha (I told him) ‘Sir, I would like you to give me a role. I would like to work with you’. He says, ‘Why?’ So I said sharmate (shying away), ‘Because I am a good actor’. He said, ‘Because I don’t need actors for my film’. He said that.”

The Vadh actress continued, “You can’t be shy. I was very shy. Mere apne doston ne mujhe kabhi koi role nahi diya. Unhone badi badi pictureyein banayi. Jinhe main jaanti hun, meri himmat nahi thi, mujhe do (My friends never gave me a role. They made big films. The people that I know. But, I never had the courage to ask them to give me a role).”
