Director Ram Gopal Varma needs no introduction and he is someone who is actually a torchbearer of realistic films. especially his films on the underworld and gangsters. He is all set to launch his own over-the-top (OTT) platform called Spark. It will go live on 15 May with the release of Varma’s upcoming film D Company. The film will be released in Telugu and Hindi.
Speaking with Bollywood Bubble the controversial RGV talks about the criminal and underworld films he has made over the years. He says, “In real life, I believe there is nothing like bad people or good people, it’s the compulsion of the situation that makes them commit a crime. There will be criminals because crime is a legal word. Anything which is a crime that you are not supposed to do under existing societal rules, you will be punished under due course. But what causes that crime? Basically, they are in an extreme situation in which the normal people are not in.”
With D Company, Varma returns to his favourite theme, the Mumbai underworld. The movie is based on the life of the dreaded gangster and terrorist Dawood Ibrahim. He adds, “Dawood Ibrahim was a street thug of Dongri in the ’90s. And before him, everyone used to talk about gangs. After Dawood, the company name came because of his entrepreneurship. I see him as an entrepreneur, though technically he is a criminal. But anyone who has a far-sight and vision like Bill Gates saw a computer in a different way, so was Dhirubhai Ambani in the industrial sector. And Dawood saw underworld in a different way.”
Ram Gopal Varma also shares that he had one telephonic call he had with Dawood Ibrahim. He says, “I have only spoken once though I can’t vouch for it because the person who transferred the call to me said it was him. It was a very brief normal 20 seconds conversation, he said that he has watched Satya, Company many times.”
