Sanjay Leela Bhansali is renowned for his glitzy, grandiose films that feature massive casts and crews, each contributing their expertise to create cinematic magic that captivates audiences. However, writer AM Turaz, who has collaborated with Bhansali for many years, feels that actors are overshadowing the hard work of the technicians.
In a recent interview with Bollywood Now, Turaz, who wrote songs for ‘Heeramandi’, expressed his disappointment at the lack of recognition for the crew’s efforts. “If actors let the creators of the songs speak… The creators are not getting the appreciation that they deserve,” he said. Turaz has previously worked with Bhansali on several films, including ‘Padmaavat’ and ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’. He further claimed that actors take all the credit, appreciation, and financial rewards, which negatively impacts the creativity and future projects of the actual creators.
Heeramandi songwriter AM Turaz on creators not getting enough credit
Turaz emphasised, “The creators are not given enough (credit and money), it affects their creativity and their next project suffers.” He believes that as long as actors continue to monopolise the limelight, it will be impossible to create high-quality content. Turaz urged actors to acknowledge the crew’s contributions in their interviews, questioning why they work with directors and writers if they cannot credit them. He challenged actors to write their own material if they do not want to give due credit, stating, “You write it yourself, who is telling you not to? You should credit them because not naming them is like snatching their credit away.”
‘Heeramandi’, currently streaming on Netflix, features an ensemble cast including Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Richa Chadha, Manisha Koirala, Sharmin Segal, and Sanjeeda Sheikh, among others. Despite the star-studded lineup, Turaz’s comments highlight the ongoing struggle for behind-the-scenes talent to receive their due recognition and appreciation in an industry often dominated by its leading actors.
In conclusion, while Bhansali’s films are celebrated for their grandeur and stellar performances, voices like AM Turaz remind us of the importance of acknowledging the collaborative effort behind such cinematic achievements. Until the industry starts giving proper credit to all contributors, it will be difficult to foster a truly creative and supportive environment for filmmaking.
