Hera Pheri 3: Anees Bazmee says he ‘don’t know why’ Akshay Kumar returned to the franchise

Hera Pheri 3 has been one of the most awaited sequels in the Hindi film industry. The film has had a tumultuous journey of its own, with so many back and forth of cast, director and other things. However, recently, the film went on floors with the original trio of Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty and Paresh Rawal returning.

Anees Bazmee on saying no to Hera Pheri 3

It also came to light that Farhad Samji is going to direct this third instalment. However, earlier reports had suggested that it was Anees Bazmee who was supposed to helm it. In a recent interview with Bollywood Hungama, Anees revealed why he said no to doing Hera Pheri 3.

He revealed, “I met the producer Firoz Nadiadwala several times. He didn’t have much of a story let alone a script. Unhone jo mujhe idea bataya woh kuch jami nahin (the idea he threw at me didn’t jell with me). Maine na keh diya (I said no).”

Earlier, Anees had opened up about having outstanding payments still uncleared from his last film with Firoz. When asked if that was instrumental in him saying no, he answered in the affirmative. He said, “Yes, that too. But if I had liked the story idea, I would have probably gone ahead. Lekin aisa kuch tha hi nahin (there was nothing to tempt me to do the film).”

Anees on Akshay’s return to Hera Pheri series

Just like Anees, even Akshay had said no to doing the film earlier. But why he chose to suddenly return, has left even Anees clueless. The director said, “After I declined the offer, I now hear the film is going to be directed by someone else (Farhad Samji). Akshay Kumar who was totally opposed to doing the film without a proper script has apparently agreed to come on board. I don’t know how or why. Only he will be able to tell. Speaking for myself, I am not part of that project anymore.”

Anees on his next film

The director is quite clear about what makes him say yes to a film. He gave a blockbuster with his last release Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 with Kartik Aaryan and Kiara Advani. Talking of his next film now, he shared, “No script no hit. It’s as simple as that. Which is why I am taking so much time over my next screenplay, which will star Shahid Kapoor. I am going to finish writing it by the end of this month. Then there will be an announcement.”
