Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt

The entire debate over nepotism is not going to fade away anytime soon. One statement by Kangana Ranaut calling Karan Johar as the “flagbearer of nepotism” was enough to kickstart a debate on the subject. Till date, star kids are constantly subjected to being products of nepotism.

So recently at JIO MAMI , filmmaker Karan Johar, once again spoke about the topic and asked Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt whether the whole debate bothers them as they come from star families. They were unabashed and honest about it.

“No, I think it is a sensitive conversation now. At one point, you could be amused by it, but it is a sensitive thing now. People are amused by it. But, if you are amused by it then people are getting sensitive. Anyway, I believe that my great grandfather worked hard in the film industry so that he could give his children the opportunity, so that they could do something in life. And so on and so forth, it reached me. When I have children, son and a daughter, I would like them to give them the opportunity where they have something to do and then it depends on how good they are,” said Ranbir. He added, “I think my father also said that politics, entertainment and actors are chosen by the public. You may get your first film, you may get your first campaign but unless the public likes you, you are not going to be elected or you are not going to be a star or a liked person. So, I believe that and yes I’m a product of nepotism. I don’t shy away from that. I know I got the opportunities easier than anybody else got and I’m very grateful. I don’t want to take advantage of that. I hope that with my work and the opportunities that I’m getting, I’m doing good. I’m not doing something where I’m filling a space of somebody who could have done better than me. So, I’m just trying to do the best of my capabilities.”

Alia Bhatt expressed her views on the same, “I agree with Ranbir that I don’t want to seem like this brat who, you know, says that ‘So what?’ I don’t, because I am very grateful. Because honestly this has been my dream ever since I remember anything about my life. So I’m aware that my connection to the family has made it way easier for me. But, I also have to not feel apologetic about it. That’s the only thing that bothers me about the whole nepotism thing that yes, definitely it exists. It exists in the Indian film industry, it exists in the business world, it exists even in schools when you’re trying to get admission. It happens everywhere. Is it a good thing or a bad thing, I don’t know. All I’m saying is I love my work and I give it my 100% and I work very hard. So, I don’t want to feel apologetic for being where I am today. Neither do I want to feel apologetic for being my father’s daughter because I love my father.”
