Ali – who has penned the stories of films like Jab We Met, Love Aaj Kal, Rockstar, Cocktail, Highway, Tamasha, Jab Harry Met Sejal, Amar Singh Chamkila and more, in a recent chat got candid about the male characters in his films.
Imtiaz Ali opened up about the heroes and heroines in the scripts he writes and why the male leads tend to be more complex than the female ones. Read on to know what he said.
Imtiaz on the male characters he writes
During a recent chat with Times of India, Imtiaz Ali got candid about the male characters in his films. The filmmaker while stating that they are not directly derived from his life experiences, also revealed why the heroes are more complicated than the heroines. He said, “The characters, namely Aditya Dharamraj Kashyap in Jab We Met, Janardan-Jordan-Jakhar (JJ) in Rockstar, Gautam or Gutlu Kapoor in Cocktail, or even Ved Vardhan Sahni in Tamasha, are not directly derived from my life experiences.”

Talking about them being more complex, Imtiaz Ali continued, “It’s not as I have only seen men creating trouble for themselves and women coming forward to solve them. Though I do credit greater intelligence and resilience to women. Perhaps this is my aspiration, to see women doing more in society which can be manifested in my films.”
