Ira Khan and her father, Aamir Khan, sought therapy to strengthen their bond. Now, Ira has opened up about the complexities of parent-child relationships. She described it as “very complicated” and shared how strange yet fascinating it can be to truly know your parents as individuals.
In a candid chat with Ahsaas Channa, Ira reflected on her battle with depression and shared valuable lessons she wished she had learned earlier. She emphasised that nurturing any relationship, including the one with parents, requires significant effort.

As children grow into adults, Ira believes their dynamic with parents should also evolve. Both sides must start seeing each other as individuals rather than sticking to traditional roles. However, this transition often goes unaddressed, leading to unintentional mistakes. Parents may continue to coddle their grown children, complicating the relationship. “It’s just very complicated,” Ira remarked.
Through therapy, Ira realized the importance of open and honest communication in building a healthy relationship between adults and their parents. A conversation with her therapist made her see that she had never truly known her parents as individuals. She confessed, “I only saw them as my parents, not as people. How can you build a relationship with someone if you don’t know them, like them?”
Ira found it both strange and fascinating to start seeing her parents beyond their roles as caregivers. “And it’s really weird and interesting to get to know your parents as people,” she added.
