In a recent interview with Mashable, Janhvi Kapoor opened up about the unexpected reaction on social media to her comment on Ambedkar and Gandhi made a few months ago. As she promoted her upcoming film Ulajh, Janhvi shared her surprise at the backlash and how her PR team wanted to edit out that part of the interview.
Janhvi Kapoor opens up about her Gandhiji vs Ambedkar comment
Kapoor said, “Is it so hard to believe that a young female actress can have an opinion? I was so shocked. The irony, I remember, is that one of the reactions was, ‘She is trained by PR.’ Till a day before the interview came out… I had said in the conversation, and after that interview got over I looked at my PR team and I was like, ‘Did I say something wrong?’ They said, ‘That might be picked up but we will see to it!'”
Janhvi explained that she began to panic as the release of Mr. and Mrs. Mahi approached. “The next day I started panicking because the film was just about to release, I don’t know which angle will be picked up. I don’t know if that’s the right thing. Then my PR team started getting hyper and they also started making calls saying, ‘Can we cut that out?’ They said no… That’s what was so ironic, that my team was trying to edit it out and people thought I was trained to say that!”
Janhvi’s interest in the topic was sparked after director Neeraj Ghaywan shared his life experiences and struggles. It all began with an interview for The Lallantop in May, where Janhvi, while promoting Mr. and Mrs. Mahi, expressed her desire to see a debate between Mahatma Gandhi and BR Ambedkar.
Janhvi’s next film, Ulajh, sees her playing Suhana Bhatia, a young diplomat caught in a web of intrigue and conspiracy. Directed by Sudhanshu Saria, the film features a stellar cast including Adil Hussain, Meiyang Chang, Gulshan Devaiah, Rajendra Gupta, and Jitendra Joshi. Ulajh is set to release in theatres on August 2.
