Shah Rukh Khan starrer Jawan is truly one of the most awaited releases of the year, expected to break box office records. The film’s advance booking opened on September 1 and Jawan exhibited a terrific start to it. But how it has turned out to be, and what are the estimates coming in at the moment? We spoke to a few trade experts who gave their insight on Jawan’s business and opening day and weekend prediction.
Jawan advance booking status
Trade exhibitor Akshaye Rathi calls the advance booking of the film ‘historic’. He adds, “The momentum the film has picked up with over 2 lakh tickets sold across national and non-national chains in just one day. That is significantly higher than many of the blockbusters that have come this year itself. It promises to be one of the greatest openers of Indian cinema.”
He even makes a big prediction for the opening weekend. “If the movies holds the ground, the promise and the records we are expecting it to, there’s a very good chance that we are talking about 4 days of 100 crores nett collection from the domestic market across all languages,” he predicts.
Film critic and trade expert Joginder Tuteja however noticed how the momentum slowed on Day 2, but expect some magic soon. He says, “The advance booking has been phenomenal. The first day was super fantastic, second day it comparatively slowed down, but was still amazing. Shah Rukh had his #AskSRK session which helped have a spike in numbers. So, I see approximately 4 lakh tickets being sold prior to the release. But then you never know, there can be some kind of magic and see a huge spike.”
Jawan Day 1 box office prediction
Speaking about the expected numbers from the opening day and weekend, Akshaye predicts, “Hindi alone on Day 1, we are looking at approximately Rs 65 crore nett. In Tamil, to what extent it goes, is still waiting to be seen. But both put together, on every single day in the first 4 days, you are looking at over Rs 100 crore gross domestically. We are hopeful that this could be the first Hindi film that can challenge the all language business of movies like Baahubali and KGF.”
Tuteja predicts similar kind of numbers, although he still feels the number from South can be unpredictable. He discusses, “It’s pretty much a given that the opening day of Pathaan will be quashed. Pathaan had done Rs 55 crore in Hindi and Rs 2 crore in Tamil. As for Jawan I see at least Rs 60 crore in Hindi even though it is a working Thursday. As for the Tamil and Telugu version, that is going to be magic. Pathaan just did Rs 2 crores there. But here we have Vijay Sethupathi, Nayanthara and some cameos that I am hearing about. So, I see at least Rs 10 crores coming in from the South market and it is a very conservative estimate. We are at least looking at a nett 70 crores start.”
The verdict is unanimous that Jawan will cross the records set by Pathaan and emerge the highest Hindi film opener. The film features SRK alongside Nayanthara, Vijay Sethupathi, Sanya Malhotra, Priyamani, Sunil Grover and Ridhi Dogra. As of now, Jawan has already sold over 4 lakh tickets nationwide and the film has a release date of September 7, 2023. With 2 more days to the release, the numbers are expected to go even higher.
