In the video, we hear Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh address the actress as ‘Shrimati Jaya Amitabh Bachchan’ as he calls her to speak. Miffed, Jaya sharply responded, “Sir, sirf Jaya Bachchan bolte to kaafi hojata. (It would’ve been enough to call me Jaya Bachchan).”
On being told the documents have her name officially registered as that, the ‘Sholay’ actress launched into a critique of the practice. She reminded the assembly that her identity stands independently of her husband’s name. She said, “Ye jo hain kuch naya tarika hain ki mahilaayen apne pati ke naam se jaani jaye. The incident received a lot of responses from netizens. Applauding her stance, a fan wrote, One fan, “She’s not wrong in any sense.” Another praised her courage, while one more questioned why Amitabh’s name was included without her consent.
