On Monday, August 29, a heated interaction took place in the Rajya Sabha involving actor-politician Jaya Bachchan. Jaya Bachchan on being called ‘Jaya Amitabh Bachchan’

In the video, we hear Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh address the actress as ‘Shrimati Jaya Amitabh Bachchan’ as he calls her to speak. Miffed, Jaya sharply responded, “Sir, sirf Jaya Bachchan bolte to kaafi hojata. (It would’ve been enough to call me Jaya Bachchan).”

On being told the documents have her name officially registered as that, the ‘Sholay’ actress launched into a critique of the practice. She reminded the assembly that her identity stands independently of her husband’s name. She said, “Ye jo hain kuch naya tarika hain ki mahilaayen apne pati ke naam se jaani jaye. Unka koi astitva nahi. Unki koi upalabdh hi nahi hain, apne mein aur astitva nahi hain? Ye jo naya shuru hua hain, I just… (Some new methods have emerged to have women known by their husband’s names. The incident received a lot of responses from netizens. Applauding her stance, a fan wrote, One fan, “She’s not wrong in any sense.” Another praised her courage, while one more questioned why Amitabh’s name was included without her consent.
