Kangana Ranaut directed Emergency in trouble; SGPC, Akal Takht demand IMMEDIATE ban for trying to character assassinate Sikhs

Kangana Ranaut is all set to play Indira Gandhi in the soon-to-release biographical political drama, Emergency. After releasing the film’s trailer a couple of days ago, the multi-starrer flick – based on the Indian Emergency that lasted 21 months from 1975 to 1977, is not in the news for not-so-pleasant reasons. As per reports, the Akhal Takht, and the SGPC have demanded an immediate ban on the Kangana starrer/directorial for attempting to “character assassinate” Sikhs. Read on to know more.

SGPC, Akal Takht demand ban on Emergency

As reported by the Times Of India, the Akhal Takht – the highest temporal seat of the Sikhs, and the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) have demanded an immediate ban on the film “Emergency”, claiming it tries to “character assassinate” Sikhs.

On Wednesday, Harjinder Singh Dhami, the President of the SGPC, took to social media alleging that Kangana “has often deliberately made expressions that provoke the sentiments of Sikhs”. Dhami also questioned the Central Board of Film Certification and demanded the inclusion of a Sikh member on the board. In a long post made from its official X handle, the committee called the film ‘anti-Sikh.’ They also sought an FIR against Kangana for allegedly “character assassinating Sikhs” in the film.

A part of his post on X read, “It is very important to include a Sikh member in the Central Film Censor Board, as unilateral decisions are being taken only because of the absence of a Sikh member. The Shiromani Committee has passed resolutions several times in its general meeting demanding that a representative of Sikhs must be included in the Central Film Censor Board, but it is a pity that the government is not implementing it. It is very important to ban this film because it is natural that the release of this film will create a lot of anger and resentment in the Sikh community (sic).”

The committee further claimed that the film’s trailer suggests ‘misrepresentation’ of the Sikh community. They say, “It is clear from the released excerpts of the Emergency film that it has deliberately misrepresented the character of Sikhs as separatists, which is a part of a deep conspiracy“.

Film must be reviewed by SGPC before release

Bathinda’s MP, Harsimrat Kaur Badal has said that Kangana’s film must be reviewed by SGPC before its worldwide release. During a media interaction in Amritsar Harsimrat, she said, ”I haven’t seen the film, but if any party fought the biggest struggle during the Emergency, it was the Shiromani Akali Dal. The late Parkash Singh Badal was the first to lead the movement and get arrested along with others.”

She added, “The Akali Dal fought the hardest throughout the Emergency and faced numerous arrests. If Sikhs are not portrayed correctly in the film, it could be because Kangana’s role does not allow for a fair depiction of Sikhs. History shows Kangana has used derogatory language against Punjabis, especially during the farmers’ protests, which indicates her bias.”
