Bollywood films and controversies go hand in hand, don’t they? Many Hindi films in recent past have been targetted by various fringe groups over its content and storyline. Now, Kangana Ranaut‘s magnum opus ‘Manikarnika’ has also landed itself into a new controversy. The fringe group of Shree Rashtriya Rajput Karni Sena issued a letter to the makers of the film.
This is the same Karni Sena, which had created a huge furore over Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Padmaavat’. The fringe group forced the makers to change the name of the film (earlier it was ‘Padmavati’) and also indulged in violent activities. Kangana’s ‘Manikarnika’ talks about the valour and bravery of Rani Laxmibai and how she fought the British.
According to Karni Sena, they have shown Rani Laxmibai’s relationship with a British officer in the film. Sukhdev Singh Shekhavat, who is the head of Karni Sena told Mid-Day, “Time and again, we have seen that filmmakers try to take liberties by showing certain scenes [with the purpose of] adding titillation. We won’t tolerate such nonsense.”
The leader of the fringe group also added, “We had raised concerns in February last year. Despite the Supreme Court judgement, we didn’t allow ‘Padmaavat’ to release in many states. ‘Manikarnika’ will face the same consequence. We have requested the producers to show us the film before its release. If they release it [without showing it to us], we will damage property [theatres, here] and won’t be liable for it.”
Bollywood filmmakers have often been held to ransom by the so called groups, who believe they are representing many people’s beliefs. As of now, ‘Manikarnika’ is slated to release on January 25, 2019.
After getting the certificate from the central board of film certification (CBFC), no group has any business to stall the release of the film. Hopefully, Karni Sena respects CBFC and allows ‘Manikarnika’ to get released.
