On Tuesday, August 6, Vinesh Phogat scripted history by becoming the first female Indian wrestler to reach an Olympic final at the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024. The wrestler defeated Cuba’s Yusneylys Guzman by 5-0 in the semi-final match and has advanced to the finals. While several sports lovers and celebrities took to social media to congratulate Vinesh on her achievement, actress-politician Kangana Ranaut seemingly took a jibe at her.

Kangana Ranaut took to her Instagram Stories and took a dig at Vinesh Phogat after her historic win. Sharing a photo of Vinesh on her Stories, the BJP MP credited her victory to the ‘great leader’ Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She captioned the pic, “Fingers crossed for India’s first Gold Medal…Vinesh Phogat at one point took part in protests where she raised the slogans of “Modi teri kabr khudegi”. Yet she was given the opportunity to represent the nation and best of the training, coaches, and facilities. Beauty of democracy and a great leader. (sic)”

For the unversed, Vinesh Phogat was one of the three top wrestlers who led a protest against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. They accused him of sexually harassing women wrestlers. Other wrestlers who stood alongside her were Bajrang Punia – who won the bronze medal at the 2020 Olympics, and Sakshi Malik – the first Indian female wrestler to win a medal at the Olympics in 2016.

Taking to his Instagram, Rajkummar Rao wrote, “And we are in the finals. It was such a joy watching you playing live. You are the pride of our nation @vineshphogat. Good luck for the finals. Our prayers are with you (sic).” Samantha reposted a post on her Instagram stories and wrote, “History made @vineshphogat (sic).”
Taapsee Pannu also took to her Instagram story and congratulated Vinesh. She wrote, “This woman is going to be recalled as a benchmark in a lot of ways for decades to come! What a woman! What a crazy year she has had and what courage she has shown. Your fan for life (sic).” Another post of the actress dedicated to Phoghar read, “And she did it.”
While Randeep Hooda simply tweeted a fingers crossed emoji along with a picture of Phogat, Riteish Deshmukh wrote, “That’s what a champion looks like after beating the World No 1 & Defending Olympic Gold Medal holder #VineshPhogat”
Vinesh Phoghat will now fight USA’s Sarah Hildebrandt for the gold medal. The match between the two will occur tonight, Wednesday, August 7. All the best Phoghat.
