The latest season of the show was filled with personal revelations, including Neelam Kothari’s candid reflections on her first marriage, which moved even the show’s producer, Karan Johar, to tears.

In a recent reunion interview for Netflix, Karan discussed the emotional impact of Neelam’s story. It was when she spoke with Ekta Kapoor about her divorce from businessman Rishi Sethia. “I was very much a part of that phase in your life,” the filmmaker shared. “It really touched me because I remember those days so vividly. I got quite teary-eyed, connecting with it on a personal level. You mentioned your daughter, and that struck a chord with me. My constant fear is having to answer similar questions from my own children about my life and my modern family situation,” said Karan Johar.

Karan Johar acknowledged the challenges he faces as a single parent, stating, “I know I will have to be accountable to my kids about many aspects of my life. Thank you for sharing that, Neelam; it was truly beautiful.”
Neelam Kothari shares poignant moment with daughter
In her heartfelt segment, Neelam recounted a poignant moment with her daughter, Ahana. “I came home from work, and it was unusually quiet. Ahana approached me and said, ‘Mumma, you never told me you were divorced‘. I was taken aback and asked her, ‘How do you know‘? She replied, ‘You’re a celebrity, so my friends and I were googling you.’ The first thing that came up was that you were divorced.”
Neelam also articulated the struggles she faced in her first marriage. Breaking down in tears as she recalled how she was pressured to change aspects of her identity. “I was told to wear Indian clothes and give up non-vegetarian food and alcohol. I complied with everything, even changing my name. But changing my identity? That’s something I couldn’t accept. There were times in public when people would ask me, ‘Are you Neelam the actress?” And I had to say, “No, I am not Neelam anymore,” she shared.
For context, Neelam married her second husband, actor Samir Soni, in 2011. The couple adopted a daughter named Ahana in 2013. Meanwhile, Karan Johar is a proud father of twins, Yash and Roohi, who were born via surrogacy in February 2017.
