Maniesh Paul has been a part of the showbiz for about 15 years now and during this while he has made a big name for himself in the industry. He has been a part of radio, TV and films, and the next Friday release JugJugg Jeeyo seems to be one of the biggest breaks in his career. The Raj Mehta directorial features Maniesh Paul alongside Varun Dhawan, Kiara Advani, Anil Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor, and is produced by his close friend Karan Johar.

The bond and fun equation between Maniesh Paul and Karan Johar has been a highlight on many reality shows and events and that relationship extends beyond the camera as well. However, this marks the first time that Maniesh is working with Karan as a producer.

During a recent media interaction, the actor revealed the story of his initial reaction on bagging JugJugg Jeeyo. He shared, “Honestly, I was a little blank. Pehle Karan sir ka itna hi call aaya tha ki ek film hai, ye role hai and mujhe lagta hai tumhe ye karna chahiye. Maine kaha acha and itne mein Raj sir called up ki paaji ek meeting karte hain. Unhone ek scene sunaya and asked me what do you think. I said ki main film to kar hi raha hun. Wo bole ki pura sunn to lo par maine kaha, ‘na, Karan sir ka call aaya hai, so it’s the end of story’. For me, the kind of respect and regard I have for Karan sir, I don’t think I will ever question him ki aap mujhe kya de rahe ho, kitna bada role hai ya main kahaan kahaan pe hun. Main film pe gaya hun aur mujhe pata hi nahi hai ki mere kitne scenes hain. Maine bola ki sir aap mujhe script de do, jo scene hai main kar dunga aake. I don’t need to question you on that. (I got a call from Karan sir first and he told me about the role and said that I should do it. Then immediately I got a call from Raj sir for a meeting. He narrated one scene to me and I told him that I am anyway doing the film. He asked me to listen to the complete narration, but I told him that Karan sir has called me so it is the end of story. The respect and regard I have for Karan sir, I will never question him for what he is offering me or how big the role is. I went on this film not knowing how many scenes I have. I just told them to give me the script and I will do it.)”

While Karan Johar and Maniesh Paul are friends in real life, the actor adds that when they worked on the film together, it added a sense of responsibility on him. He said, “For me, it was my responsibility to make sure that the work that has been given to me should be delivered. If he expected 10 from me, I must give 15. So, that’s how I believe. Tum koi bhi relationship granted nahi le sakte. I wasn’t like ki ‘theek hai, theek hai kar denge, Karan Johar ne bulaya hai’. (You can’t take any relationship for granted. I wasn’t taking it lightly that since Karan sir had called me, now I can do whatever I want.) I don’t believe in that. For me, that call suddenly becomes a professional call. Masti, maza alag chalta hai but jab hum kaam ki baat kar rahe hain to hum kaam ki baat kar rahe hain. As a producer, I think Karan sir jaisi pampering koi nahi deta. He makes sure you are comfortable on set and ye ek bahut badiya producer ki quality hai jo maine pehli baar sir mein dekhi. (Our banter is on one hand but when we talk about work, it’s just about that. No one pampers you like Karan sir does as a producer. He makes sure you are comfortable and this is one amazing quality of him as a producer that I got to see for the first time).”

The actor also opened up about being told by people to ask for work from Karan. “Bahut log kehte hain ki aapki itni achi dosti hai, aap kaam kyun nahi karte ikatthe ya fir aap unse film kyun nahi maangte. Par maine kaha nahi kyunki wo dosti hai and dosti mein hum kaam mix nahi karte. Jis din unko actor Maniesh Paul ki zarurat hogi, he will give me a call, and that happened. And I have all the patience in the world, main koi jaldi mein to hun nahi. (A lot of people have told me that since we have such a good friendship, why don’t we work together or why don’t I ask Karan sir for a film. But I have said no to it because I don’t mix work and friendship. And I knew the day he would need actor Maniesh Paul, he would call and that happened. I have all the patience in the world as I am in no hurry). He also knows and tell me that I am a good actor ,” he insisted.

But when asked if the equation between the two changed in anyway during the course or after the film, Maniesh negated that. “We are still the same. Wo masti maza chalta hai but as an actor, main unke feedback ka hamesha wait karta tha . To jab wo ek call aata tha na ki I saw the rushes and it’s brilliant, I used to feel happy (Our banter still continues but as an actor, I used to wait for his feedback. And when I would get his call appreciating my work, I used to feel happy),” Maniesh concludes.
