Karan Johar is a filmy guru. The director-producer has experienced every aspect of filming; from being behind the camera to being in front of it. And while he had still not ventured in the digital space, he is all set for that too.
Karan, who recently threw a huge bash after his debut movie ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ completed 20 years, in an interview with LiveMint revealed that he will soon venture into digital space as well. “We’re planning to (go digital) next year. It’s going to be a solid digital company—we want to be content providers and creators. We have everything in place already and we’re good to go in a few months,” says the versatile filmmaker.
If reports are to be believed, Karan’s production banner, Dharma productions will now be producing episode based series and feature films for OTT streaming platforms like Amazon Prime and Netflix. The budgets for the same will be similar to that of big screen films.
Karan also plans on trying hands into many other digital forays including short videos and interviews.
Speaking in length about his mainstream films and how he deals with films that he knows that can fail on box office, Karan said, “Of course you go ahead with the release, you can’t leave the film in the cans, you’ve got investments, you need to recover them. I can’t afford to not release a film, I haven’t reached that stage yet. And I feel digital cannot be a dumping yard. If you’ve chosen to make a film that is not going to work, release it, take the backlash, move on,” he added.
