Actress Sunny Leone, who is set to appear in a Malayalam film, was denied permission to perform at an engineering college by the Vice-Chancellor of Kerala University. Reports indicate that the performance, initially scheduled for July 5, 2024, has now been cancelled.
According to Manorama, Kerala University’s Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Mohanan Kunnummal, denied permission for a dance performance by Bollywood actress Sunny Leone. The event was slated to take place at the University College of Engineering campus in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.
Know why Sunny Leone was denied from performing at the Kerala University
The vice-chancellor instructed the registrar to ensure that Sunny Leone’s show would not be included in the university’s program list. This decision follows a tragic incident from November of the previous year, when a stampede at a concert at Cochin University of Science and Technology in Ernakulam resulted in the deaths of four students and injured over 60 others just before singer Nikita Gandhi’s performance at a music festival.
In response to the stampede-related deaths at events in Thiruvananthapuram Engineering College and Cusat, the state government has banned external DJ parties and music nights on campuses. Dr. Kunnummal emphasised that despite this directive, the University College union attempted to organise a dance program without proper authorisation. He stated that such programs would not be allowed either on or off-campus under the union’s name under any circumstances.
Sunny Leone’s further projects
Sunny Leone is currently preparing for her upcoming Malayalam movie. In April, she shared glimpses from the muhurat ceremony.
Shehas appeared in several Bollywood films, including Ragini MMS 2, Jism 2, Mastizaade, among others. Her most recent appearance was in the 2023 film Kennedy, directed by Anurag Kashyap, where she starred alongside Rahul Bhat. In addition to her Bollywood career, Sunny Leone has been involved in South Indian cinema, featuring in films like Thee Ivan and Mrudhu Bhave Dhruda Kruthye. She has also appeared in music videos, including Mera Piya Ghar Aaya 2.0.
The cancellation of Sunny Leone’s performance underscores the university’s commitment to ensuring student safety in the wake of past tragedies.
