Kiran Rao is a talented filmmaker who debuted as a director in 2011 with Dhobi Ghat. However, it took her over a decade to bring the audiences her second directorial, Laapataa Ladies. The 2024 comedy-drama – released theatrically on March 1, has impressed the public and the filmmaker couldn’t be happier.
During a recent interaction, while celebrating the film, Kiran got candid about being away from the filmmaker for a decade to look after her and Aamir Khan’s son Azad. She revealed she suffered multiple miscarriages before their son was born. For those who do not Khan and Rao welcomed Azad in 2011 via a surrogate. The now-divorced couple currently co-parent Azad.
Kiran Rao on suffering multiple miscarriages
During a recent interaction with Zoom, Kiran Rao opened up about going through multiple miscarriages before finally having son Azad through surrogacy. Stating that she really wanted to be a mother, the ‘Laapataa Ladies’ director said, “The year that Dhobi Ghat was made was the year that Azad was born. And I had tried very hard to have a child. For five years, I had had a lot of miscarriages, a lot of personal, and physical health issues. I was just finding it very hard to have a child.”
Kiran on taking a break from filmmaking for 10 year
Talking about taking a break from filmmaking to raise Azad, Kiran continued, “I was really keen to have a child, so when Azad was born it was… I didn’t have to make a decision. Obviously, all I wanted to do was raise my baby.” She added, “I enjoyed having Azad so much. Those were some of the best years of my life. I’ll never regret not having made a film in 10 years. I have no regrets because I enjoyed it thoroughly.”
Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies enjoyed an average box office run and was screened at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).
