Kunaal Roy Kapur: There has been a growth for me through my association with Rohan Sippy

Kunaal Roy Kapur has collaborated with director Rohan Sippy for a sitcom ‘Sandwiched Forever’. This is Kunaal’s fourth collaboration with Rohan. The series released on SonyLiv on December 25. The show also stars Ahaana Kumra, Zakir Hussain, Divya Seth Shah, Atul Kulkarni and Lubna Salim.

On working with Rohan and how his association with the filmmaker has helped him, Kunaal said, “We both of us share a very similar sensibility for comedy. Things are very easy to communicate with him. He has a great ability to make things funny and even funnier at the next level of humour to think. He has an interesting knack of taking a moment that people might generally not find humour in it but he will add something that will even make it funnier. We have been working together for 12 years now and it has been a very fruitful relationship and I hope it will continue in the future also.”

He added, “From ‘Nautanki Saala!’ to now, I think my understanding of many things have improved and it’s all because of my interactions with Rohan and I have understood other aspects of him like production and direction apart from acting. There has been a growth for me through my association with him.”

Talking about the format of ‘Sandwiched Forever’, Kunaal said, “I don’t think many people are doing this format anymore and it’s not very easy to do honestly. Each episode is a stand-alone episode. The other thing is that you need talented actors as it is shot very much like a play. I think to execute that you need actors who don’t do close-up and over-the-shoulder shots. It’s not as easy as people think. It’s complicated. But if the show works, it has a great repeat value. Even today if you see, sitcoms have wonderful repeat values. You can watch any episode of any sitcom and that’s the beauty of this format. Once you know the characters, you can watch any episode without following the entire show. But you should understand the characters properly. Once you understand the dynamics, then you can enjoy from anywhere. The format was very exciting for me and all six were theatre actors. So working with them was very exciting.”
