These days when you open social media, one thing that pops up is overnight sensation Ranu Mondal. By singing Lata Mangeshkar’s iconic song ‘Ek Pyaar Ka Nagma’, Ranu grabbed the headlines instantly. She is now a household name and had recorded three songs with music-composer Himesh Reshammiya for his upcoming movie ‘Happy Hardy and Heer’.
As reported by IANS, when Lata ji was asked about Ranu, the legendary singer said, “If anyone gets benefited from my name and work then I feel fortunate.” But she also said that imitation is not a reliable and durable companion for success. “By singing my songs or Kishore da’s (Kumar), or (Mohd) Rafi Saab’s, or Mukesh bhaiyya or Asha’s (Bhosle) numbers, aspiring singers can get short-term attention. But it won’t last,” she said.
Lata ji also gave a bit of advice to the aspiring singers. She said, “Be original. By all means sing the evergreen songs by me and my colleagues. But after a point the singer must seek and find his or her own song.”
She also gave the example of her own sister Asha Bhosle. “If Asha (Bhosle) had not insisted on singing in her own style she would have remained in my shadow forever. She is the biggest example of how far individuality can take one’s talent to,” added India’s nightingale.
